Bishnoi Village Away from the royal palaces, rich heritage and vibrant markets of the big cities and offering a glimpse into the rural life of Rajasthan is an expanse of dry yellow desert speckled with greenery, leading to a small village which is as true to simplicity and tradition as the deserts are, to the land.
Located 22-kms from Jodhpur, Bishnoi makes for a very picturesque setting. Surrounded by dry desert and a few stray trees, the bare surrounding is complimented well by the striking attire of the villagers - men in their bright white "dhotis" and women in their colourful "lehengas" and elaborate jewellery. But Bishnoi is more than just a visual treat, the people here have their own unique story to tell, through traditions which date back to more than 500 years. This jeep safari helps you discover the lesser known side of the princely state which is tucked away into this quaint little village. The safari can be arranged for at 8:00 am or 2:00 pm, as per your convenience.
Once here, you get to walk amidst the small huts and towards the place where the weavers and potters go about their daily work. You can interact with them and learn more about their life and work in the small village. The language barrier should be no problem since you will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide who is well-versed in the local tongue. But what sets them apart is their love for nature and the reason behind it.
The residents here, part of the Bishnoi tribe, follow a unique lifestyle that revolves around preserving and worshipping nature and its many gifts. The village was established by a Guru in the 15th century who implemented a law to conserve animals and trees with an intention to preserve nature in its true form. He also died proclaiming that the Black Buck, now an endangered species, is his manifestation and hence should be conserved. The villagers, to this day, worship nature by expressing their love and care for animals, especially deer, and antelopes. The tribal culture lets them treat and view animals as one of their own. The women even breastfeed deer that are often lost or abandoned from their herd.
Get a further insight into the lives of this amazing tribe by visiting a Bishnoi family. As you mingle with them, you also get to taste a few delicacies of their pure vegetarian cuisine.
