Folk Music and Dance of Jaipur

Folk Music and Dance of Jaipur has numerous types of folk dances that are attractive, able and to some degree pleasant by any age gathering. Jaipur folk dances are famous all around the world. Ghoomar Dance - The word Ghoomar is derived from the word “Ghoomna”, which means moving in circles. It is a dance form performed by women of the house of all age groups on special occasions like festivals, weddings and ritual occasions. This is a simple form of dance where the ladies move gently with graceful movements in circular motions to form the steps. The dance typically involves pirouetting of performers while they move in and out of a wide circle and is expected to last for hours. The swaying movements of the dance convey the spirit of enthusiasm among women on favorable occasions. The marvelous charm of the women with the skirts flaring slowly while women rotate in circles with their faces covered by the veil is adorable.

Chari Dance - This is a famous dance type performed in the Kishangarh region of Rajasthan. Chari Dance is performed by women on special occasions like marriage celebrations, festivals and birth of a male child etc. This dance form is prominent in Saini and Gujjar communities of Ajmer and Kishangarh region. Chari Dance is executed by dancers who are colorfully dressed and hold a lighted lamp or a pot on their head. The dancers make elaborate patterns with their hands along with toe movements while holding brass pots on their heads.
Chari Dance celebrates the traditional ritual of women walking for miles to collect water for their families. The dance is performed on music played on Dholak, Nagada, Thali and Harmonium.

Kachhi Ghodi - This form of dance initiated from Bandit region of Shekhawati. It is performed by men especially in bridegroom’s party for entertainment. Men are dressed in traditional attire like kurtas, dhotis and turbans and ride on lavishly decorated dummy horses. Men hold naked swords and move musically on beats of drum.

Kathputli - “Kathputli”, the word reminds of colorful images of Rajasthan folklore. It is an old and popular form of folk entertainment. It is a well known dance form known all over the world as Puppetry dance. This famous dance form brings in light famous mythological stories from the past. Kathputli Dance is an old tradition of narrating stories via puppets. String Puppet, Rod Puppet, Shadow puppet, Glove puppet are different type of puppets found in India.
