Historically, the mosque was founded in the last year of the life of the Gujarat Sultanate, before the Mughals took over the region. Begada fell for the widowed Queen Rudabai ‘s beauty, and asked her to marry him.The Queen agreed to marry Begada provided he completed the construction of the stepwell her husband began. He accepted, and began building again. Rani Rudabai jumped into the vav when the well was done, and committed suicide.
