The Lake Palace in Udaipur is located on the Jag Niwas Island on a sprawling 1.5 hectare land. This magnificent structure was built on the Lake Pichola by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1734. Known as Lake Garden Palace, Jag Mandir has been built on the island of Lake Pichola. The construction of this structure has been credited to the three Maharanas of Mewar. This palace was started by the Maharana Amar Singh in the year of 1551 and was later carried on by Maharana Karan Singh and completed by Maharana Jagat Singh.
Hence it is called Jagat Mandir or Jag Mandir. Serving as a summer resort and pleasure area for the royal family of Mewar, this place is also famous for holding parties and wedding functions. In here you will find Gul Mahal, Darikhana, Garden Courtyard, Bara Patharon ka Mahal, Zenana Mahal, and Kunwar Pada ka Mahal. Jag Mandir is the main palace and it includes the Gul Mahal. The towers at the corner are octagonal in shape and have cupolas on the top. Residential suites, reception halls and internal courts adorn the palace. The architecture of the building reflects Mughal and Rajput style. The Zenana Mahal is constructed adjoining to the main temple and the Kunwar Pada ka Mahal is located at the western end of the structure. The Gul Mahal was built by Maharana Amar Singh and it was developed by Maharana Jagat Singh for housing the Mughal prince Khurram. The palace has been built with sandstone, black marble, and has a crescent of Islam fixed on the dome of the structure.
Saheliyon ki Bari is a beautiful garden in the city of Udaipur and is one of the popular Udaipur tourist places. Fountains, marble art and the lush lawns attract the public each time. Saheliyon ki Bari in English means the ‘garden of maids’. This garden represents a green retreat of Maharana Sangram Singh in the desert lands and was built in the 18th Century for the royal ladies of Mewar.
It is situated on the banks of the lake Fateh Sagar and is one of the stunning places to visit in Udaipur. According to the legend here, the garden was personally designed by the king and gifted to his queen. The queen had 48 maids accompanying her after the marriage and to offer them peace and happiness away from the regular life, this garden was built. There are four water pools, marble elephants, fountains and kiosks around the here. The bird fountains and the lotus pool are very popular. The stunning and romantic view of the garden makes it a special place for lovers. Rain fountains were added to the garden later by Maharana Bhopal Singh.
Lake Pichola :-
This is one of the most important places to visit in Udaipur. Lake Pichola is the reason we call Udaipur the ‘City of Lakes’. Built in 1362, and extending 3 miles in length and 2 miles in breadth, this lake is an essential part of Udaipur and far by its best feature. Astonished and amazed by the beauty of Lake Pichola, Rudyard Kipling once wrote: “If the Venetian owned the Pichola Lake, he might say with justice, `see it and die'”. Take Kipling at his word and visit Lake Pichola when in Udaipur, both in the day and at night. the lake takes on a whole new character depending on the time of the day. In the morning, lake and palaces are quiet.
The lake is speckled with tourist boats and people clicking selfies line the shores. As night creeps in, all the Palaces around the lake light up and illuminate the lake. No boats, no birds, nothing to see except the lit-up palaces as they stand impressively around the lake. It is an awe-imposing spectacle. Rajasthan’s hospitality is its iconic trademark, but even its friendliness is so off-the-cuff. I remember walking through the narrow alleys of Udaipur during the festival of Diwali and it was all so fervent. I received smiles, amiable gestures and support while I was taking pictures and exchanging casual pleasantries with the hawkers. People’s inherent warmth instantly melted my hesitation as a solo traveler.
2. Festive atmosphere
Rajasthan is a land of festivals. There are so many held annually such as the Desert Festival, Pushkar Fair, Elephant Festival, Gangaur Festival, Marwar Festival and Nagaur Festival just to name a few. Also, the atmosphere in general is very festive. When I was in Jodhpur there were traditional folk dance and music performances held at the hotel every evening.
3.Good accommodation options
When you are traveling solo, good accommodation is a top concern. Rajasthan has all kinds of options to choose from – luxury hotels, guest houses, heritage resorts, budget hotels and home stays. Apart from comfort and amenities, the hotels give you great hospitality and a true ‘Rajasthan’ experience.
4. Open-minded and respectful locals
Although Rajasthan is a highly conservative state, the locals respect a visitor’s individuality. If a woman is rambling all alone in any city of Rajasthan, she would be respected for who she is and her background. Even if she is from a different culture or follows a totally different way of life, she wouldn’t draw attention. The locals in general know that they have to receive each guest with reverence.
5. Personal space
Although people are friendly, they give you space to do your own thing. I remember when I was in Jaisalmer, I found my own little corner where I sat with my laptop to catch up on work. There was another foreign girl there too, curled up with a book, while another guy was sunbathing. Thus, the feeling of being in Rajasthan is very homey.
6. Variety of things to see and do
Every nook and cranny in the cities of Rajasthan are so full of buzz. Some of my most memorable moments were people-watching and strolling along Lake Pichola in Udaipur, dining at Ambrai restaurant and bar with a view of the Lake Palace, catching a panoramic view of Udaipur, watching the sunset at Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, and wandering the alleys of Jaisalmer Fort.
7. Ideal for slow travel
I learned the art of slow travel in Rajasthan, as I didn’t feel the need to do typically touristy things all the time. I chose to skip a monument or two and happily relaxed at my hotel in Jodhpur, chatted with the staff, explored the nearby market, observed the local life, woke up before the hotel staff one morning to catch the first glimpse of sunrise and enjoyed a cup of tea with my fellow travelers.
The best thing that happened to me in Rajasthan was to be received by one of the hotel staff at the train station. Most of the hotels in Rajasthan offer free transport from the airport/railway station to the hotel. It puts you at ease to simply be escorted to your hotel, while you are solo.
9. Free WiFi
There is free WiFi in almost all the hotels in Rajasthan. It makes things easier, especially when you are traveling solo and you need to keep in touch with people at home. I enjoyed updating my friends and family with the latest pictures and happenings on my trip.
10.Safe and inviting
Although I don’t like to categorize places as safe or unsafe, Rajasthan is relatively safe. I traveled to the desert all on my own from Jaisalmer. Comprehending my anxiety, the chauffeur took good care of me, and even the camel riders and the desert camping staff were so caring. Rajasthan welcomes a solo traveler with open arms.

Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur also called the ‘Tiger Fort’ was built by Jai Singh II with the aim of providing a strong defence to the city. Standing majestically on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, Nahargarh Fort is the best place to view the splendid beauty of the Pink City.The walls of the fort are extended over the hills to form fortifications that connect it to Fort Jaigarh. The fort was basically used as a place of protection for the Europeans including the British wives of the region during the first war of Indian Independence in 1857. Organised in the honour of the ship of the desert, the Camel Festival is a spectacular festival celebrated in Bikaner. Celebrated every year in the pleasant January, the Camel Festival is a two-day long affair with a colourful parade of the decked up camels against the backdrop of the magnificent Junagadh Fort. Nagaur Fair is the 2nd largest cattle feast in India. This carnival provides the largest platform for trading cattle, cows, bullocks, oxen, camel and horses. People are seen wearing vibrant dresses and long moustaches. Visited by many tourists every year, Nagaur Fair captures the essence of Rajasthan and will blend you with their beautiful culture. Every year in the month of Kartik, Pushkar Mela is celebrated. Elephant Festival Jaipur :-

This manmade lake was built by Anaji Chauhan (grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan) during 1135-1150 AD. On its bank is a pleasant park, the Daulat Bagh, containing a series of marble pavilions erected in 1637 by Shah Jahan. One can witness the beautiful sunset while boating on Ana Sagar lake. Sprawling across 13 km, the pond captures the picturesque beauty of Ajmer. but acts as a source of livelihood for all the local people of this city. Pushkar Lake is considered as the holiest lake in India. This water reservoir is enclosed by 52 ghats (personal ghats for 52 Maharajas of India) and 500 temples. According to a Hindu mythology, this lake was created by the fallen petals of Lord Brahma’s lotus when he was destroying the demon Vajra Nabha. Lotus petals were struck at a particular place and water spurted from there giving it the shape of a pious. The charm of Pushkar Lake is also mentioned in some old books like Abhigyan Sakuntalam, Mahabharat and Ramayana. A dip in this holy water can purify one from all the sins, troubles and ailments. Sacred to the Hindus as well as the Sikhs, this lake has its mention in history since the 14th century.
Coming to Udaipur, and missing a boat ride on this lake is like committing a crime. One of the oldest and the biggest lakes in Udaipur, Pichola lake is world famous for its picturesque beauty and scenic surrounding. Rudyard Kipling mentioned this lake in his Letters of Marque (1899), “If the Venetian, owned the Pichola Lake, he might say with justice, see it and die'”. Considered as the pride of Udaipur, this artificial lake was constructed under the reign of Maharana in 1960. Gadsisar Lake was a water conversation tank built in 1400 AD, and was constructed under the reign of Maharwal Gadsi Singh. If a traveller wants to enjoy bird watching on their tour to Jaisalmer, then Gadsisar lake is the right place to be. On the bank of Gadsisar lake one can see a gateway made of yellow sandstones known by the name of Tilon Ki Pol. A Krishna Temple is located by the side of the archway. An interesting fact about the lake is that it never dries as it gets continuous water supply from the Indira Gandhi Canal. One can enjoy a calm and smoothing boat ride on this lake. Gadsisar Lake is home to multiple variants of catfishes as well.
Kalyana lake is an ideal site for all the bird watchers. It is an artificial lake, and was built in 1872. Spread over an area of 8 km, Kaylana lake is the best spot to witness the spectacular sunset.
