Some of the main attractions of Chittorgarh are:

Chittorgarh Fort Chittorgarh :-
The most fabulous attraction of the city, this fort is the largest fort in India. Considered as one of the best forts of Rajasthan, it was built in the 7th century in a majestic Rajput architectural style. Beautifully set on a 180 m high hill, the fort boasts of several attractions such as Fateh Prakash Palace, Rana Kumbha Palace, Rani Padmini’s Palace and Chhhatris. A visit to this fort will take you back to the times of Rajputs.

Rana Kumbha Palace Chittorgarh :-
Rana Kumbha Palace is a part of number of legends. These legends are associated with queen Padmini of Chittorgarh. The palace is also named after the greatest of the Sisodias. The location of the palace also has its association with the history of the place. It is in this location where Padmini committed Jauhar or self immolation. The self immolation was also joined by 700 followers to save honor. This was done as a way to avoid getting dishonored at the hands of the enemies. However, after much effort, archaeologists still haven’t discovered the underground cellars where this act was performed.

On visiting the Rana Kumbha Palace, you will surely be able to come across a number of historically significant items. The palace was built by Bappa Rawal in 734 AD. He was the founder of the House of Mewar. It was later renovated by Maharana Kumbha. The palace had also played the role of residence to Princess Mira Bai. She was a famous poetess of that era. The palace also has its association with the legend of Panna Dhai who saved infant Udai Singh.

Vijay Stambh Chittorgarh :-
Vijay Stambh or the Tower of Victory is yet another historical monument that shows the valour and vigour of Rajaputs. The Tower of Victory built by Rana Kambh in 1440 AD, to honour the victory over the Mahumud Khilji of Malwa. Although the Chittorgarh fort comprises of a lot of temples and palaces the Tower of Victory holds a special importance. Each slab on the tower signifies various aspects.
The fort was under siege thrice but has survived all through it and hence holds much historical importance and values. The Vijay Stambh has 9 storeys and each storey is decorated with the mythical stories of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The beauty of this structure is more enhanced during the evenings when it is illuminated.

Padmini Palace Chittorgarh:-
One of the prominent tourist attractions in Chittorgarh, Padmini’s Palace narrates the story of the Cleopatra of India-Rani Padmini in its design. Also known as Rani Padmini’s Palace, it flaunts a three-Storeyed structure, which has its outer walls painted white and it overlooks a pleasant lotus pool. Surrounded by water, the architecture of the Palace is somehow influenced by the Jal Mahal of Jaipur.
History has it that Alauddin Khilji was smitten by the beauty of Rani Padmini and he used the surrounding water to catch the glimpses of her. His efforts to possess her resulted in the death of the Queen’s husband and her committing Jauhar. Today, the famous Padmini palace stands as a promising symbol of beauty, valor, honor and tragedy of the past of Chittor.

Government Museum :-
One of the most popular museums of Chittorgarh, Archaeological Museum is home to such valuable artifacts that are of immense historical significance. Placed at the eastern ending of Banbir-ki-Diwar, this museum boasts of an amazing collection of innumerable historical artifacts sourced from the Chittorgarh Fort and objects related to Hinduism as well as Buddhism that were found at the time of the excavation. Fresco Paintings Of Shekhawati

Fresco Wall Paintings of Shekhawati India:

Fresco wall paintings of Shekhawati are unique in themselves, although it was the Mughal kings who made murals fashionable, their religious indictments forbade them from having man or animal as motif; they were allowed only floral and abstract designs. To an extent this posed as an obstacle. Wall painting in Shekhawati boomed only after Mughal power was declined. For the early corpus, the artists depended heavily on traditional Indian subjects. This consisted of scenes from mythology, especially of Lord Krishna, local legends, animals and plants, daily lives of men and women, towns and the Shekhawat Rajas. Most of the towns are good enough to see classic  fresco wall paintings, few are Mandawa, Ramgarh, Fatehpur, Nawalgarh, Bissau, Dundlod, Alsisar etc.

The fresco painting artists were called chiteras, who belongs to the kumhars (potters)  caste. They are also called chejaras (masons) since they works both as painters and builders. The paintings were depicted in bright two-dimensional paintings. The chejaras used only natural colors for their art, like kajal (lamp black) for black, safeda (lime) for white, neel (indigo) for blue, geru (red stone powder) for red, kesar (saffron) for orange, pevri (yellow clay) for yellow ochre and so on. Mixed in limewater and beaten into plaster, they remained vibrant for almost as long as the building lasted.

The stories –

The havelis earned their splendour through backbreaking effort. Mural painting was an elaborate process, involving different materials, layers and techniques. Scenes depicted cover 10 broad themes—decorative designs, daily life, religion, raga mala, folk mythology, historical events or personalities, flora and fauna, erotica, maps or places, and the British and their contraptions. Most chhatris or domes include a rasamandala in the ceiling—a dancing circle in which Krishna miraculously replicates himself so each Gopi finds him dancing next to her.

Besides popular love stories such as Laila–Majnu and Heer–Ranjha, Shekhawati’s murals have a recurrent theme of a couple astride a camel portraying Rajasthan’s most popular romantic tale—Dhola–Maru. Married off as kids, Dhola returns as an adolescent to fetch his wife. En route, they encounter bandits Umra–Sumra, and like a true Rajput wife, Maru repels the attackers while Dhola urges his camel onwards. Paintings also represent lesser-known folk tales of Binjo–Sorath. Binjo mesmerises his young aunt Sorath with his veena as she dances to his tunes. Sassi–Punu recounts the legend of Punu, a prince who weds Sassi, an abandoned princess raised among washermen. Tragically, Punu is kidnapped and Sassi dies in search of him in the desert.

The colours –

Before the 19th century, artists used natural colours such as lampblack, and red, green and yellow ochres. Lime was a substitute for white and was used for lightening other hues, while indigo, ultramarine, vermilion, verdigris, gold and silver were reserved for prayer rooms and bedrooms. The Indian Yellow, made from gomutra or urine collected from cows fed on mango leaves, was used, albeit rarely. In 1860, German chemical pigments such as ultramarine, chrome red and emerald green reached India and remained popular till World War I, until supplies were hit. (Inspired by ‘Made in Germany’ paint tins, many painters randomly emblazoned the word ‘Germany’ to depict anything English!) Maroon was popular from 1820 to 1865, red and blue held sway between 1860 and 1910, and multi-coloured paintings using cheap European paints dominated the years from 1900 to 1950.

Haunted Fort Bhangarh

Bhangarh Fort Alwar –

The stories of haunted forts in India is nothing new, we have grown up on them. However, the fort which symbolizes such haunted tales is Bhangarh Fort. Located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, this 17th century fort is infamously known as the “most haunted place in India”. Visitors to the fort attest to ghostly sightings and unnatural experiences within its compounds, and the stories of its being haunted are so widespread and believed that villages have sprung up quite far from the fort itself. The ASI, or the Archeological Survey of India, has, on its part, forbidden the locals, as well as the visitors, from visiting the fort at night.

Legends behind the Bhangarh Fort –

There are several legends surrounding the eeriness of the Bhangarh Fort.  According to one legend, a king named Madho Singh built the fort after obtaining permission from an ascetic who laid down the condition that the shadow of the fort must never fall on his house. However, one of the successors of Madho Singh increased the size of the fort vertically, thereby enveloping the ascetic’s house in its shadow. As a consequence, the fort soon met its destruction and was abandoned in no time.

According to the second legend, a local black magician was supposedly bewitched by the beauty of Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh. To possess her, he cast a spell over a certain cosmetic she was supposed to use. However, the princess soon discovered his plan, and poured the entire cosmetic upon a massive stone boulder. This boulder then crushed the princess to death. However, before breathing his last, he cursed the entire place, saying that not a soul would ever reside there in peace. The entire surroundings around the Bhangarh Fort have been haunted ever since, or so it’s believed.

Architectural significance –

Bhangarh Fort is situated at the edge of a vast green expanse of Sariska Tiger Reserve between Alwar and Jaipur, with a close proximity to Delhi, too. The fort bears close resemblance to the medieval city of Shahjahanabad. It consists of four massive gates in every direction. The premises of the fort consist of a miniature waterfall, along with temples, which lend an air of tranquility to the entire surroundings. Remnants of once existing palaces can also be found inside the fort, they are indicative of the fort’s prosperity during its glorious days. Clearly, the fort’s popularity doesn’t need to rest on the haunted stories surrounding it, it is an architectural marvel in itself.

Visit The Royal City Palace Of Jaipur State

City Palace, Jaipur  is a palace complex in Jaipur, the capital of the Rajasthan state.  It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the head of the Kachwaha Rajput clan.  The palace complex, located northeast of the centre of the grid-patterned Jaipur city, incorporates an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, initially by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. He planned and built the outer walls, and later additions were made by successive rulers continuing up to the 20th century. The credit for the urban layout of the city and its structures is attributed to two architects namely, Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the chief architect in the royal court and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from the Sawai himself who was a keen architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved a fusion of the Shilpa Shastra of Indian architecture with Rajput, and Mughal.

History of City Palace :-

The history of the palace is intertwined with the history of the great city of Jaipur itself. The City palace used to be the throne of the Maharaja of Jaipur, head of the Kachwaha Rajput Clan. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh was the force behind the initiation of the Palace’s construction when he began shifted the capital from Amber to Jaipur in the year 1727. He then began building the outer wall sometime during the years 1729 to 1732, such that it ran over to several acres through the city.

Architecture of City Palace :-

The architectural style of the City Palace was a fusion of the Shilpa Shastra of Indian Architecture along with Rajput, Mughal and European styles. The main architects for the construction of the palace were Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Classical Indian principles such as the Vastushastra were promptly followed by the architects during the construction of the palace. It was built using red and pink sandstone and has three gates, namely ‘Tripolia Gate’, ‘Udai Pol’, ‘Virendra  Pol’. The entrances themselves are decorated intricately with the finest handiwork and are a suitable preamble to what lies inside. The palace complex is designed in the form of a grid and has a number of structures within its bounds such as ‘Chandra Mahal’, ‘Govind Dev Ji Temple’, ‘Mubarak Mahal’, and ‘Diwan-I-Khas’. Murals, mosaics, honeycomb window panes and meticulous stonework make the Palace a perfect blend of design, art, colour and culture.
