Jaisalmer is a small town, with population just over 18 000 it’s easy to explore on foot. A day will be enough to see all of its tourist attractions like the magnificent Jaisalmer fort and the lovely Haveli’s. Yet the reason why to stay in this town longer is camel safaris. There are many tour operators who will gladly arrange a tour in the Thar Desert. The camel safaris are cheap a day in the desert will cost somewhere around 1500 Rs for one person. They are well arranged and the only duty you will have is to enjoy your safari.

A typical camel safari lasts two days; you leave on the morning and come back next day on the afternoon, although a longer trip can be arranged. The good thing is that most hotels will not charge you for the night on safari and that your big backpack can be left in the hotel for safe keeping. There are a couple of popular safari routes in the desert that lead through some villages.

The longer safaris are most likely to go off the beaten track. The sleeping and eating on the safari is very well organized. When I was on the camel safari there I really enjoyed the food that was cooked on open fire and sleeping on the sand dune under the sky. The guides or camel men as they are sometimes called all speak English and most definitely will take good care of you.

The camels are well kept. Though it gets kind of annoying at the end of the second day to sit and dangle on the camel’s back and people with sea sickness probably will have problems adjusting. In case you can’t take the ride of camel’s back any more, you are free to walk.
The two day camel safari might not be the adventure of your life, still it is a well spent time. You will get to know a little piece of rural India. The nature of the desert is amazingly beautiful and the camel safari itself is a very enjoyable and relaxing activity. Chittorgarh Fort Chittorgarh :-

Rana Kumbha Palace Chittorgarh :-
Rana Kumbha Palace is a part of number of legends. These legends are associated with queen Padmini of Chittorgarh. The palace is also named after the greatest of the Sisodias. The location of the palace also has its association with the history of the place. It is in this location where Padmini committed Jauhar or self immolation. The self immolation was also joined by 700 followers to save honor. This was done as a way to avoid getting dishonored at the hands of the enemies. However, after much effort, archaeologists still haven’t discovered the underground cellars where this act was performed.
On visiting the Rana Kumbha Palace, you will surely be able to come across a number of historically significant items. The palace was built by Bappa Rawal in 734 AD. He was the founder of the House of Mewar. It was later renovated by Maharana Kumbha. The palace had also played the role of residence to Princess Mira Bai. She was a famous poetess of that era. The palace also has its association with the legend of Panna Dhai who saved infant Udai Singh.

Vijay Stambh Chittorgarh :-
Vijay Stambh or the Tower of Victory is yet another historical monument that shows the valour and vigour of Rajaputs. The Tower of Victory built by Rana Kambh in 1440 AD, to honour the victory over the Mahumud Khilji of Malwa. Although the Chittorgarh fort comprises of a lot of temples and palaces the Tower of Victory holds a special importance. Each slab on the tower signifies various aspects.
The fort was under siege thrice but has survived all through it and hence holds much historical importance and values. The Vijay Stambh has 9 storeys and each storey is decorated with the mythical stories of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The beauty of this structure is more enhanced during the evenings when it is illuminated.

Padmini Palace Chittorgarh :-
One of the prominent tourist attractions in Chittorgarh, Padmini’s Palace narrates the story of the Cleopatra of India-Rani Padmini in its design. Also known as Rani Padmini’s Palace, it flaunts a three-Storeyed structure, which has its outer walls painted white and it overlooks a pleasant lotus pool. Surrounded by water, the architecture of the Palace is somehow influenced by the Jal Mahal of Jaipur.
History has it that Alauddin Khilji was smitten by the beauty of Rani Padmini and he used the surrounding water to catch the glimpses of her. His efforts to possess her resulted in the death of the Queen’s husband and her committing Jauhar. Today, the famous Padmini palace stands as a promising symbol of beauty, valor, honor and tragedy of the past of Chittor.

Government Museum :-
One of the most popular museums of Chittorgarh, Archaeological Museum is home to such valuable artifacts that are of immense historical significance. Placed at the eastern ending of Banbir-ki-Diwar, this museum boasts of an amazing collection of innumerable historical artifacts sourced from the Chittorgarh Fort and objects related to Hinduism as well as Buddhism that were found at the time of the excavation. One can also spot Buddhist stupas, under the trees. These stupas are placed quite close to Patta Tank and Jaimal Tank.

The collection at Archaeological Museum in Chittorgarh includes Stone Age objects, art and craft objects, coins, frescos, metallic objects, paintings, inscriptions, weapons, sculptures and terracotta figures etc. This museum was originally a fort, built by Maharaja Fateh Singh Ji during the 19th century. In the year 1968, it was transformed into a museum by the government.

RAJASTHAN INTERNATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL (A.K.A JODHPUR RIFF) :-
A real delight for those who have a ear for folk music, the Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF) held in Jodhpur sees more than 250 musicians and performing artists attend the event. These artists make their way here from all over India and the world to celebrate Rajasthan’s rich musical heritage. Treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind folk music festival that is an amalgamation of international and local folk music to produce a stellar production set against the backdrop of the majestic Mehrangarh Fort.

This annual festival was started in 2007 by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust and the Jaipur Virasat Foundation, two of India’s leading heritage trusts, collectively called the TRIFF Society. The society has taken up this initiative in a bid to promote the tradition folk music and art form and they accomplish this task with great aplomb by arranging an assortment of events like a jazz night, a Rajasthani night, gypsy dance performances, traditional dance forms and even early morning ragas. What’s more, this event is planned to coincide with Sharad Purnima, a harvest festival celebrated on the full moon day in the lunar calendar.

MTV’s Coke Studio is known for its brilliant live studio recorded performances by music legends. On 17th October 2015, Coke Studio, held at Jaipur in the backdrop of a magnificently illuminated Albert Hall enthralled people with a spectacular line-up of musical talents such as Amit Trivedi, Ram Sampath and Sona Mohapatra. It was attended by over 10,000 people.

Famous Forts in Jaipur :-

 Jaipur, one of the most beautiful places in the desert land of Rajasthan, is an integral part of India tourism. Sawai Jai Singh II, the then ruler of Rajasthan established the city of Jaipur in the year 1727. Amer Fort  :-

Among the famous forts in Jaipur overlooking Maota Lake, stands the majestic Amber or Amer Fort , which was inhabited by the Rajput royals until Jaipur was established.  Perching up on the hill, this fort can be reached by a jeep ride or an elephant ride. It opens its doors to the perfect blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture which shows the grandeur of yesteryears with its elaborate mirror work. Some of the places to visit here are the Shila Mata temple, Jas Mandir and the splendid Sheesh Mahal. Brilliant paintings, stone and mirror works are exceptional here.  One has to stay back till evening when the fort comes to life with its sound and light show which is impressive and enthralling.

Jaigarh Fort :-

Built in the year 1726 by Jai Singh II the Jaigarh, is one among forts in Jaipur is also known as the ‘Fort of Victory’. A fine example of a self sufficient place, it is dominated by the huge walls and watchtowers. The thick walls are of red sandstone which runs to about 3 kms.The architectural features are of Indo-Persian style. It is home to beautiful palaces with scenic landscape. The granaries, water reserves and storage systems are the finest examples of science and technology then. Some of the best places to visit here are the Ram Harihar temple, Kal Bhairav temple, museum for arms and ammunitions of those days and the largest cannon named Jaivana.

Nahargarh Fort :-

Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur also called the ‘Tiger Fort’ was built by Jai Singh II with the aim of providing a strong defence to the city.  Standing majestically on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, Nahargarh Fort is the best place to view the splendid beauty of the Pink City.The walls of the fort are extended over the hills to form fortifications that connect it to Fort Jaigarh. The fort was basically used as a place of protection for the Europeans including the British wives of the region during the first war of Indian Independence in 1857. It was also the hunting residence of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Though these are the major forts in Jaipur apart from that it also offers some amazing places to visit as a sightseeing option.

Such beautiful are the lakes that even Udaipur, a famous destination in Rajasthan, is called ‘City of Lakes’ and ‘Venice of the East.’ The country’s largest salt lake – Sambhar Salt Lake is situated in the located quite close to Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. Also, these lakes of Rajasthan mark many mythological events too. Legends has it that the Pushkar Lake of Rajasthan appeared when Brahma dropped a lotus flower. This manmade lake was built by Anaji Chauhan (grandfather of Prithviraj Chauhan) during 1135-1150 AD. On its bank is a pleasant park, the Daulat Bagh, containing a series of marble pavilions erected in 1637 by Shah Jahan. One can witness the beautiful sunset while boating on Ana Sagar lake. Sprawling across 13 km, the pond captures the picturesque beauty of Ajmer. but acts as a source of livelihood for all the local people of this city. Right in the middle of the lake is an island which can be reached by a motor boat. There are several attractions around the Ana Sagar lake which add to its charm.

Pushkar Lake :-

Pushkar Lake is considered as the holiest lake in India. This water reservoir is enclosed by 52 ghats (personal ghats for 52 Maharajas of India) and 500 temples. According to a Hindu mythology, this lake was created by the fallen petals of Lord Brahma’s lotus when he was destroying the demon Vajra Nabha. Lotus petals were struck at a particular place and water spurted from there giving it the shape of a pious. The charm of Pushkar Lake is also mentioned in some old books like Abhigyan Sakuntalam, Mahabharat and Ramayana. A dip in this holy water can purify one from all the sins, troubles and ailments. Sacred to the Hindus as well as the Sikhs, this lake has its mention in history since the 14th century.

Pichola Lake Udaipur :-

Coming to Udaipur, and missing a boat ride on this lake is like committing a crime. One of the oldest and the biggest lakes in Udaipur, Pichola lake is world famous for its picturesque beauty and scenic surrounding. Rudyard Kipling mentioned this lake in his Letters of Marque (1899), “If the Venetian, owned the Pichola Lake, he might say with justice, see it and die'”. One will fall in love with this lake the moment one sees it. There are many islands within this lake. The famous tourist destination of Udaipur, Jag Mandir is also a part of this lake. The pristine blue waters of the lake leave a soothing impact on the spectator. At the time of sun-set, a boat ride on this lake is sufficient to enthrall anyone.

Fateh Sagar Lake Udaipur :-

Considered as the pride of Udaipur, this artificial lake was constructed under the reign of Maharana in 1960. Boating on the blue water of the lake, which is overlooked by mountains from three sides, is an experience to remember. There is a garden amidst the lake i.e. Nehru Park, which is a lovely open space with a boat-shaped restaurant. Sprawling over 2.4 kms, Fateh Sagar lake is one of the places where travellers can enjoy the scenic beauty of Udaipur. The lake lies on the northwest of the main Udaipur city.

Gadsisar Lake Jaisalmer :-

Gadsisar Lake was a water conversation tank built in 1400 AD, and was constructed under the reign of Maharwal Gadsi Singh. If a traveller wants to enjoy bird watching on their tour to Jaisalmer, then Gadsisar lake is the right place to be. On the bank of Gadsisar lake one can see a gateway made of yellow sandstones known by the name of Tilon Ki Pol. A Krishna Temple is located by the side of the archway. An interesting fact about the lake is that it never dries as it gets continuous water supply from the Indira Gandhi Canal. One can enjoy a calm and smoothing boat ride on this lake. Gadsisar Lake is home to multiple variants of catfishes as well.

Kaylana Lake Jodhpur :-

Kalyana lake is an ideal site for all the bird watchers. It is an artificial lake, and was built in 1872. Spread over an area of 8 km, Kaylana lake is the best spot to witness the spectacular sunset.
