Deepawali – Festival of Lights

India is a country of fairs, festivals and celebrations, There is no season in India without its particular festivals and festivities. Dipawali or Diwali is a major Indian festival observed with much enthusiasm, gay abandon and good preparation. But gradually the earthen lamps are being replaced by candles and electric lights. This has affected the potter badly and his income has dwindled. The festival reminds us of Lord Rama’s triumphant return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana of Lanka. On this day Rama was crowned as king of Ayodhya and celebrations were held on a large scale. And every nook and corner was lighted with lamps at night. During night Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth is worshipped and her blessings sought. The businessmen close their old accounts and open new books on this auspicious day. The Jains celebrate it because Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara obtained Nirvana on this day.

This is a very corrupt practice being indulged in. The history of Bikaner dates back to the late 15th century when enraged and provoked by his father, Rao Bikaji quit the palace in Marwar and established the kingdom of Bikaner in the midst of the desert surroundings. The Zenana quarters in particular capture the attention of tourists as they exhibit exquisite designs of great artistic skill. Gajner Palace– The palace is situated about 20kms from the city of Bikaner and is set up beside a beautiful lake called Gajner Lake. One has the opportunity to enjoy nature walks, boating and desert safaris near the palace. Karni Mata Temple is probably one of the most famous places to visit in Bikaner. This temple is known for its sizable population of rats that are the permanent residents here. Today, there are about 20,000 rats that live in the temple premises and no doubt attract the attention of many travelers. National Research Centre on Camel is more of a breeding farm, which has about 230 camels of 3 different breeds. The centre is situated about 8kms from Bikaner and is open for visitor between 2.30PM to 5PM. Small museum and camel ride make this place particularly special for visitors.

Sand Dunes Safari – Since, Bikaner is within close proximity to the great Thar Desert, taking a safari is the obvious things to do. There are jeeps and camels available for the sand dune safari. Another architectural delight in Bikaner is Lalgarh Palace. The palace also consists of a museum that is situated inside Ganga Niwas. Here one can see the Miniature Paintings that are related to Bikaner school of art, Terracota Wares and armors. There is also a library that has a good collection of Sanskrit Manuscripts written on parchments, plaques of silver, copper and gold. The artifacts belonging to Harappan civilization and Kushan and Gupta Age are also preserved here. Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary– About 32kms from Bikaner, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal place for wildlife adventure near Bikaner. The sanctuary shelters many species of animals like Chinkara (black buck), wild boar, neelgai. One can also find a sizeable population of birds here like sand grouse.

This seven storied palace is famous for beautifully carved balconies and pagoda-shaped cupolas which summons scores of tourists to this place.

Havelis in Jaisalmer:

These are the gorgeous mansions which served as the residence of the erstwhile Wazirs i.e. ministers and landlords. These havelis are known for their supreme architectures which are famous for carvings, stone inlays, ornamental lattice and tracery works. The construction and decorations of havelis showcases supreme blend of Rajputana and subtle Islamic architectures. As there is sunlight in almost all the days of the year, it is known as Sun City and most of the houses here are painted blue and so is also known as Blue City. The history of Jodhpur starts from the year 1459 AD when it was founded by Rao Jodha of the Rathores.

Jodhpur is well connected with other major cities by road, rail and air. Jodhpur has an airport located 5 km from the main city and has regular flight services to Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Udaipur. Jodhpur rail network comes under that of the North Western Zone and is connected with all the metro cities of India. There are some famous lakes here namely Balsamand Lake, Kailana Lake, Ranisar Padamsar and Gulab Sagar Lake.

The shopping area of the city is located in Nai Sadak and Sardar Market. The place is popular for its Bandhej sarees and dress materials and Mojris or Jootis, the shoes with pointed front. Handicrafts, spices and tea are also obtained here as souvenirs. There are numerous handicrafts and handloom shops around the town.

In Jodhpur, formal restaurants are less in number but there are lots of standup street food stalls in every corner of the city. They serve samosas and such Rajasthani delicacies as Makhaniya Lassi, Mawa Kachori, Panchkuta, Dal Bati Churma, Gatte Ka Saag, Kabuli, Mirchi Bada and sweets like Gulab Jamun, Kabuli and other Jodhpur specialties.

Some of the popular restaurants of Jodhpur are located near Jalori Gate and Sardar Market and they serve fish, kebabs, dal, paneer and roti items. There are many good hotels to stay and some of the old palaces have been converted into heritage hotels. They are expensive but they serve to be ideal destination for hosting wedding parties and other social gathering. One good hotel is Ranbanka Palace built by Maharaja Ajit Singh. The Rajasthani cuisine is served here and the processions of dancers, elephants, camels and horses are seen here that depicts the old heritage of the land.

If you are looking for budget hotel, you can find them around station road, near clock tower and near Ummed Chowk. Jodhpur is comparatively a safe city to stay. As it is very hot in summer season with its desert climate, it is advisable to visit the city in winters. There are nearby get outs worth visiting such as Jaisalmer, Mount Abu, Luni Fort, Osiyan and Udaipur.
