Ajabgarh And Bhangarh Trip From Jaipur

ATTRACTIONS IN AJABGARH AND BHANGARH

Ajabgarh & Bhangarh  is a ruined town in the Alwar district of the state of Rajasthan, India, most famous for its historical ruins. It is said to be a haunted place. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has put up a signboard by the main gate stating (among others): “Entering the borders of Bhangarh before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited.” The reason for this may be that there can be wild animals and it could be unsafe because there is no artificial lighting. Bhangarh is at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve.

Bhangarh is a place between Jaipur and Delhi in Rajasthan state of India. Bhangarh is known for its ruins, but still worth a visit; the place is beautiful and tranquil. What remains though, is a shadow of a once beautiful kingdom.

Passing by Bhangarh, banyans and temples dot the landscape and one chhatri can be seen up on the hill. The most remarkable are the temples of Gopinath, Shiva (Someshwar), Mangla Devi and Keshava Rai. Other more or less preserved buildings are e.g. shops along the main road, several havelis, a mosque, and a palace. The palace was protected by two inner fortifications across the valley. The town is separated from the plain by ramparts with five gates. Bhangarh is also a pre-historic site.

This town was established in 1573 (VS 1631) during the rule of Raja Bhagwant Das as the residence of his second son Madho Singh. Madho Singh was younger brother of Emperor Akbar’s General Man Singh I of Amber. Madho Singh participated in many campaigns with his father and brother. The next ruler of Bhangarh was his son Chhatr Singh. Bhangarh slowly declined after Chhatr Singh’s violent death in 1630. Near Ajabgarh was founded by Ajab Singh, the son of Chhatr Singh. When Mughal Empire became weaker after the death of Aurangzeb, Jai Singh II attached Bhangarh to his state by force in 1720. After this Bhangarh diminished in population, and when the famine of 1783   fell on the land the town was abandoned, and has remained a ruin ever since.

It is said that the city of Bhangarh was cursed by the Guru Balu Nath, causing the towns evacuation. Balu Nath sanctioned the establishment of the town but said: “The moment the shadows of your palaces touch me, the city shall be no more!” Ignorant of such foreboding, one ambitious descendant raised the palace to such a height that its shadowed Balu Nath’s forbidden retreat and thus the town was devastated as prophesied. The small samādhi where Balu Nath is said to lie buried is still there.

The other myth is as follows: The charm of princess of Bhangarh Ratnavati was said to be matchless in all of Rajasthan. Being eighteen years old, the princess started getting matrimonial offers from other states. In the same region there lived a tantrik, a magician well versed in the occult, named Singhia who was desperately in love with the princess knowing that he would never be allowed to even see her, let alone meet her. One day, he saw the princess’ maid in the market buying scented oil for her. Seeing this, he got an idea by which he could meet the princess. He used his black magic and put a spell on the oil which would hypnotize the princess by her merely touching the oil, and she would surrender herself. The princess foiled this plan though. She had seen the tantrik enchanting the oil, and she therefore threw it away, whereupon the flagon rolled over a stone. As soon as the oil touched the stone, it started rolling towards the wicked tantrik and crushed him. While dying, Singhia cursed the palace with the death of all who dwelt in it, without any rebirth in their destinies. The very next year there.

Bhangarh Fort Same Day Trip From Jaipur

Bhangarh Fort Alwar –

The stories of haunted forts in India is nothing new, we have grown up on them. However, the fort which symbolizes such haunted tales is Bhangarh Fort. Located at the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, this 17th century fort is infamously known as the “most haunted place in India”. Visitors to the fort attest to ghostly sightings and unnatural experiences within its compounds, and the stories of its being haunted are so widespread and believed that villages have sprung up quite far from the fort itself. The ASI, or the Archeological Survey of India, has, on its part, forbidden the locals, as well as the visitors, from visiting the fort at night.

Legends behind the Bhangarh Fort –

There are several legends surrounding the eeriness of the Bhangarh Fort.  According to one legend, a king named Madho Singh built the fort after obtaining permission from an ascetic who laid down the condition that the shadow of the fort must never fall on his house. However, one of the successors of Madho Singh increased the size of the fort vertically, thereby enveloping the ascetic’s house in its shadow. As a consequence, the fort soon met its destruction and was abandoned in no time.

According to the second legend, a local black magician was supposedly bewitched by the beauty of Princess Ratnavati of Bhangarh. To possess her, he cast a spell over a certain cosmetic she was supposed to use. However, the princess soon discovered his plan, and poured the entire cosmetic upon a massive stone boulder. This boulder then crushed the princess to death. However, before breathing his last, he cursed the entire place, saying that not a soul would ever reside there in peace. The entire surroundings around the Bhangarh Fort have been haunted ever since, or so it’s believed.

Architectural significance –

Bhangarh Fort is situated at the edge of a vast green expanse of Sariska Tiger Reserve between Alwar and Jaipur, with a close proximity to Delhi, too. The fort bears close resemblance to the medieval city of Shahjahanabad. It consists of four massive gates in every direction. The premises of the fort consist of a miniature waterfall, along with temples, which lend an air of tranquility to the entire surroundings. Remnants of once existing palaces can also be found inside the fort, they are indicative of the fort’s prosperity during its glorious days. Clearly, the fort’s popularity doesn’t need to rest on the haunted stories surrounding it, it is an architectural marvel in itself.

It is also the place where the great saint Vashishth lived and performed a yagna (sacrificial worship on a fire pit) to create four Agnikula (four clans of fire) to save the earth from demons. The yagna was supposed to have been performed near a natural spring, which come out from a rock shaped like a cow’s head. According to another myth, once sage Vashishth’s cow Nandini was trapped in a deep gorge and could not free herself. The sage request Lord Shiva for help. The Lord sent Saraswati, the marvelous stream, to help flood the gorge so that the cow could float up. Vashishth then decided to make sure that such mishaps did not occur in future. He asked the youngest son of Himalaya, the king of mountains to fill the break permanently. This he did with the help of Arbud, the mighty snake. This spot came to be known as Mount Arbud and was later changed to its present form – Mount Abu.  This place is held in worship by Jains as well since Jain scriptures record that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankar (spiritual leader), also visited Mount Abu of Rajasthan and blessed the city.
