The Laxmi Vilas Palace is home to the Royal Gaekwad family who were once rulers of Baroda’s princely state before independence from India. In 1063, in memory of her husband King Bhimdev I of the Solanki dynasty, Rani (Queen) Udayamati commissioned this vav or stepwell.
