Goa airport was established in the 1950s on 249 acres by the government of the Estado da Índia, Portuguesa. Soon after its inception till the year 1961, the airport served as the main centre for the local airline TAIP Transportes Aéreos da Índia Portuguesa. It served Daman & Diu, Karachi, Mozambique, Timor and other places with frequent flights. The airport was taken over by the Indian Navy's air wing in the year 1962 when Major General K.P. Candeth, who had led the victorious military operation into Goa, "handed over" the airport to the Indian Navy before resigning as its military governor to a Lieutenant Governor of the then Union Territory of Goa in June.
