India offers many exciting journeys for the adventurous traveller. One such treat for the unconventional tourist is the camel safari.
The north-western state of Rajasthan, with its breathtaking Thar Desert offers some unforgettable experiences of camel safaris along with intimate glimpses into the desert life and its invaluable treasure troves of music, dance and natural vistas. While the dry, snowy deserts of Leh and Ladakh in the northern tip of the country also have camel safaris on the two-humped Bactrian camels, the Rajasthani camel safaris offer the truly fantastic flavour of the sun and the sands.
The dry winter months between September and March see a huge number of tourists visiting Rajasthan for camel safaris as the weather is perfect, with comfortable and temperate daytime temperatures and fairly cold nights. Being one of the biggest tourist draws of the region, camel safaris that suit all kinds of financial brackets have been started, so that tourists with a range of budgets can have this memorable experience.
Camel Safari in Jaisalmer
We were driven one hour outside of Jaisalmer, to a small village in the middle of the desert. Before meeting our camels, we met these charming kids, who were thrilled to have visitors in their village. Tyler and Kara are always a big hit and usually have to answer tons of questions from everyone they meet (names, where we are from, and they want to know all about Kara’s stuffed lion, Simba).
It was in this village that we met our camels and climbed aboard for our late afternoon ride out into the desert. I was the first one on the camel. Once the camel stands up, you are really high off of the ground!!
Camel Safari Ladakh
Camel safari in Ladakh is enjoyed in the month of July, August and September. You will traverse through rutted mountain terrains on camels. The cold deserts of Ladakh offer beautiful sights of colorful landscapes and remote villages. Spend your nights under the studded sky. Camel safari imparts exciting views of glorious vales, Buddhist Gompas. You can explore pretty settlements such as Nubra and its valley, a fantastic place.
From Leh, you travel to Hunder, and take a camel ride through the sand dunes and picturesque valleys to Diskit. Take a short ride to Tegger village for another fascinating camel ride with the river to Pinchimic. Ladakh is well known for its nonpareil beauty, which can be treasured with two-humped camel ride.
Camel Safari In Jodhpur
Jodhpur is one of the more cosmopolitan cities within Rajasthan and while it does not have desert vistas around, it is the gateway to many luxurious and five-star desert safari experiences because of the prominence of the city itself. One of the most visited dunes around the Jodhpur stretch is Osian, a beautiful desert village which now flaunts some of the most luxurious desert safari camps in the area.
The most prominent one, which can be opted by travellers who like splurging is Reggie's Camel Camp run by Reggie Singh, from the local royal family. For the more modest travellers, home-stays such as the Hacra India are highly recommended for an unparalleled experience of the world of the locals. Other nearby areas such as Bishnoi village, Ranakpur, etc., are also beautiful and many operators such as Bishnoi Village Safari or Gemar Singh Private Tours in Jodhpur operate in the area for all kinds of prices suitable for travellers with varied budgets.
