Imphal
The capital of Manipur, Imphal, is a politically and economically important city in the North East. If you are visiting Imphal, the Loktak lake should definitely be on your bucket list. Located about 38 km from Imphal, this lake with a cluster of small islands makes for a breathtaking sight. If you are lucky, you may be able to capture the sunset, which looks magical from there! The Red Hill Lokpaching is a hillock located around 16 km from Imphal. It is a sight of historic significance, where the British and the Japanese fought a fierce battle during WWII. It also houses the India Peace Memorial, a monument dedicated to the Japanese soldiers who lost their lives in battle. If you are not short on time, you could also visit the Sadu Chiru Falls or Leimaram Waterfall, located about 25 km from Imphal. It is located in the midst of the valley and is a beautiful testimony to the country's natural beauty.
Best Time to Visit
Imphal can be visited all around the year, barring the rainy months. The month of October is a pleasant one with clear skies and in November, the winter season starts. During this time, the weather is cold but foggy too. The days can be spent enjoying sightseeing and other fun activities. During January, the sun appears less in the sky and the temperatures can go down to zero degree Celsius. February again brings pleasant climate and March brings more of it. The summer season in Imphal starts from April and stays till May, when the temperature ranges between 35 degree Celsius and 17 degree Celsius. Since this is a hill town, the summers are not really harsh, one can enjoy sightseeing during. The days are warm and the nights are cool.
The months of June, July and September bring lots of rain in Imphal. In June, its keep raining all throughout the day, bringing down the temperatures. Sightseeing at this time can be difficult. However, if you love rains, then the showers make Imphal look even more green and stunning.
How to Reach
By Air :
The airport of Imphal called the Imphal Tulihal airport is located 8 km southwards of the city center. Regular flights connect this airport with important cities of India such as Aizawl, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Dimapur, Agartala Guwahati and Silchar. The nearest international airport to Imphal is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, around 490 km away. From the airport, you can hire a cab or a taxi to take you to the city.
By Train :
Imphal does not has its own railway station and the nearest railway station to Imphal is Dimapur Railway Station in Nagaland, which is around 215 km away. This railway station is linked to important Indian cities such as Mariani, Guwahati, Kolkata and Kamakhya through regular flights. From here, you can either rent a cab or go in-board a bus.
By Road :
The capital city of Manipur, Imphal is well- connected by road to cities of Manipur and the neighboring states. Regular state-run as well as private buses are available to and from Dimpaur, Silchar, Kohima, Aizwal, Itanagar, Nagaland, Agartala and Shillong. You can also rent a private cab.
