Namgyal Institute of Tibetology
Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is built in the Tibetan architectural pattern. This beauty is centuries old and of Buddhist culture. This historical museum is constituted with many attractive corners with delicate collections. It will make a tourist feel like being in heaven and photography is prohibited inside the museum. The research of Tibetan and Buddhist culture will imbibe in the study. The foundation of culture, religion, architecture, literature, philosophy and Tibetan history prevail in this culture.
The NIT’s library holds one of the largest collections of Tibetan works in the world outside Tibet. The vast collection includes antique Lepcha scripts, Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscripts, statues and antique thankas and other prized relics of religious art. Adjacent to the Institute is a Memorial park dedicated to Miwang Chogyal Chempo Palden Thondup Namgyal, 17th in the line and 12th consecrated Denzong Chogyal (King of Sikkim)
This Institute is situated in Deorali, to the south of central Gangtok. The opening hours are from 10 am to 4 pm from Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sundays, second Saturdays every month and on official government holidays. A token entrance fee to the museum is levied to all visitors.

The premise has a Museum located on its ground floor, which has the unique collection of statues, coins, masks, thangkas, Tibetan art work & objects, and ancient manuscripts contributed by the great monks and kings. To stuff your bag with gifts and souvenir like intricate items including German silverware and typical Sikkimese clothing, there is shop just opposite to the institute building named as Asta Mangala Art. Within short walking distance is Do-Drul Chorten Stupa, top among the must visit places in Gangtok.
