Hemis Festival Tour 2023 - Festival of Ladakh

The Hemis Festival is one of the most colourful and the largest religious festival of Ladakh. It is an opportunity to witness unique cultural fiesta that leaves each traveler and passionate photographers beguiled. Hemis Festival is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the Lunar month of the Tibetan Calendar, which usually falls between the months of June & July, every year. The festival is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil and to seek blessings of spiritual leader Guru Padmasambhava for spiritual and health well-being.

The highlight of the festival is the masked dances known as “Cham Dance”. These very lively dances are performed by the Lamas (monks), who wear intensely multihued and elaborate masks and a headgear, and dance to the beats of traditional Tibetan instruments like longhorn, cymbals, drums and trumpets, and act out feats performed by Guru Padmasambhava. What makes the dance interesting and quirky at the same time are the heavy and colorful costumes and masks that these Lamas adorn. And each mask holds its own unique significance. With their spectacular moves and expressions, they generate a massive energy in the environment to create an aura of intense positivity. What adds to the scene is the adrenaline-pumping beats of the music. In addition, the picturesque location of Leh also offers unique natural settings for a tourist's delight.

The local people and natives dress up in their best traditional attires and gather for the function in the courtyard of the beautifully adorned Hemis Monastery, which is the venue for Hemis Festival. Hemis Monastery is one of the largest Buddhist Monastery of Ladakh, with the stunning Himalayan mountains at its backdrop.
