Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur, also called Bhadgaon or Khwopa (Newari name), is located in the eastern corner of Kathmandu Valley, about 14km away from Kathmandu. Together with Kathmandu and Patan, it is one of the three major cities in Kathmandu Valley as well as one of must-be-visited tourist destinations in Nepal. Devoid of the traffic and pollution makes Bhaktapur a more popular place for a comfortable walking. Though the 2015 earthquake caused terrible devastation in Nepal, but only a few temples in Bhaktapur were destroyed and many traditional buildings survived.

Bhaktapur is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and there are literally hundreds of examples of traditional Newari architecture here. As you wander the city streets, you’ll constantly come across breath-taking buildings boasting complex patterns and the classic red brick exteriors. One of the most striking examples of architecture in Bhaktapur is Nyatapola Temple, unmissable due to its soaring five-tier roof. You can climb up the temple’s long steps, stand under the arches and look down over beautiful views of the Taumadhi Square and its surrounding hills.

Another must-see is Durbar Square, still stunning despite the earthquake damage. Many of the main temples are in the process of being repaired and restored after the quake. But, you can still enjoy sites like the Golden Gate of Bhaktapur, an incredibly detailed entryway that opens to the courtyard of the royal palace.

Bhaktapur – Birthplace of Medieval Architectures and Art
Generally, Bhaktapur attracts tourist with its charming architectures and traditional arts. As one medieval city-state, it enjoys time-honored and well-preserved artworks including palaces, temples, yards etc. The brick-red is the dominant hue of the ancient city of Bhaktapur. The old red bricks, chestnut woodcarvings, dense temples and brick stupas show the featured style of Bhakatpur. From Bahaktapur, you are able to take a glimpse of the architectures in Mid Ages. Bhaktapur is a recommended place for wandering around. One is sure to feel like travelling back into the past while walking along the Bhaktapur thoroughfares, squares and streets. You will also suck in the unique local culture atmosphere. Craftsman paint colorful clothes, square are full of earthen pots and kilns, locals gather together to talk and play card games.
