Deeg Palace in Bharatpur used to be the summer resort of Bharatpur Kings. Built-in 1772 by King Suraj Mal, Deeg Palace is built with a blend of Rajput and Mughal architecture. The design of the gardens has been inspired by the Mughal Charbagh. The palace forms a quadrangle with a garden and walkways at its center. Decorative flowerbeds, shrubs, trees, and fountains cool the place considerably during summer. It is one of the famous tourist destinations in Bharatpur.
After acquiring the throne, Badan Singh chose Deeg as his stronghold and capital and initiated the construction of the palace around 1730 AD. He became the founder of Jat House in Bharatpur and under him, the place grew prosperous and urbanized. His son, who is often hailed as the hero of the Jat dynasty, Surajmal, later constructed the fort around the palace, which provided protection against outer attacks.
The architecture of the Deeg palace dates backs to centuries back. The architecture of the place is a perfect combination of the Mughal and Rajasthani art. It was Jat king Suraj Mal who has laid the foundation of this beautiful palace back in 1730 AD. Suraj Mal was so impressed by the Mughal architectural style that his fascination towards the same can easily be seen in the fortification of Deeg Palace. There is a garden in the fort yard of the palace which resembles to that of the Charbagh, the Mughal Garden.
Built in the square shape the Deeg Palace is adorned with the nine hundred fountains. You are suggested to visit Deeg Palace during the monsoon season to view fountain running, during monsoon season on Saturdays the fountains runs. Gopal Sagar and the Rup Sagar is the two huge water tanks present in the fort. On the next to Rup Sagar tank stands the Keshav Bhavan which is comprises with five arches. This is the place where king used to spend his leisure time in monsoon season. With that he also conduct meeting with his officials here in Keshav Bhavan.
Gopal Bhavan in the fort is the place where king used to reside. From Gopal Bhavan you can get a spectacular of the gardens. Nandi Bhavan in the palace was a place of wrestling matches. Monuments in Bharatpur The history of Bharatpur dates back to 5th century BC, when the Matsya kingdom flourished here. The Matsyas were allies of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata war. Legends say that the origin of the name Bharatpur is traced to Bharat, younger brother of Lord Ram. Laxman, the other brother, was given the most prestigious position as that of the family deity of the ruling family of Bharatpur. His name also appears in the state seals and coat-of-arms.
In the early 18th century, Maharaja Suraj Mal captured the fort of Bharatpur by vanquishing Khemkaran, the rival chieftain and laid the foundation for Bharatpur. The valiant Maharaja was very keen to expand the cities and is credited with building the numerous forts and palaces that dot the kingdom, including the Pleasure Palace Complex at Deeg.
Bharatpur Tourism is also home to one of the world's best-known bird watching destinations, Keoladeo Ghana National Park (KNP). 250 years ago, the then ruler built embankments that allowed flooding of this land, turning it into a marsh. Named after the dense jungle that surrounded an old Shiva Temple, this 29 square kilometre man-made wetland is renowned for migratory birds – ducks, geese, waders, raptors, flycatchers and more. In winter, avid birders and ornithologists flock to the park to observe and study the feathered beauties. With more than 370 recorded species, KNP used to also host the Siberian crane. It is a World Heritage Site.
