Baran, a popular district in the state of Rajasthan, was carved out of Kota District on 10th April 1991. The place is covered with forests of Sagavan, Kher, Salan and Gargsari and the river Kalisindh flows through the region. It was ruled by the Solanki Rajputs during the 14th and 15th centuries.

There are various spots in Baran that attract travellers from all over the country. Sitabari, Kakoni, Bilasgarh and Shahabad Fort are some of the popular tourist sites here. Among these, Sitabari holds a great historical and religious significance. As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Sita, the consort of Lord Ram, gave birth to their sons Luv and Kush at this place. It is believed that Sita used to live here with her sons when she left Ayodhya. A temple dedicated to Goddess Sita is located here. Travellers can also see various water kunds in the vicinity of the temple. Sitabari Mela, a popular fair is held here every year.

Some of the noted religious sites of Baran include the Bhand Devra Temple, the Brahmani Mataji Temple and the Manihara Mahadev Mandir. In the Atru Tehsil of Baran, travellers can see the remains of Garhgachh. These include the ancient temples that were constructed between the 9th and 13th centuries. The Bhand Devra Temple is one of the famous shrines of Baran. Also known as the ‘Khajuraho of Rajasthan’, this temple is situated at a distance of 40 km from Baran on the Ramgarh Hill. The temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva, was constructed in the 10th century. The famous temples of Kisnai and Annapurna Devi are also located on the hill.
