Deeg Tourism

Deeg is a small town in the royal city of Rajasthan which was found by Maharaja Suraj Mahal in the 18th century. It was said to be a summer holiday resort for the royal family. The history of Deeg is not limited to only the royal era. It is said that in Hindu mythology, Deeg was situated on the parikrama path of Krishna that is said to have started from Goverdhan. Goverdhan is 14 kilometres away from Deeg. Deeg was also served as the capital of the Jat state of Bharatpur. Maharaja Suraj Mahal fortified this small town and built it from the ground. It is also known as Dirgah or Dirghapur and was a place of significance for the Maharajas. Deeg thus makes a significant tourist place because of its amazing architecture, beautiful palaces and the local culture.

Not very far away from Deeg is the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary that is a must visit in the small town. The Deeg palace has 900 fountains and is open to the public twice a year on Amavasya festivals. These Amavasya festivals happen in February and September. Deeg is located away from the main city and thus is a calm place to be. People often come here to relax and leave their regular lives for a while. The beautiful landscape of Deeg makes it a scenic and picturesque. The local bazaar off Deeg is hustling with people and is lively all the time.

History of Deeg Palace
The history of the Deeg Palace is much older than what one actually expects. Legends have that once Lord Krishna started his parikrama from Goverdhan and blessed Deeg with his auspicious presence. According to the Skand Puran the former name of Deeg was Dirgha or sometimes it was referred as Dirghapur.
According to the medieval history, Deeg used to serve as the first capital of Bharatpur state during the rule of Badan Singh in 1722. He built this palace and due to its close proximity with Agra, the palace has faced many attacks by the invaders. To protect this fort from regular attacks Surajmal, Badan Singh’s son built the strong fortress with towering walls, bastions, a deep moat and high ramparts which are still standing tall and strong.

Architecture of the Deeg Palace
The architecture of the Deeg palace dates backs to centuries back. The architecture of the place is a perfect combination of the Mughal and Rajasthani art. It was Jat king Suraj Mal who has laid the foundation of this beautiful palace back in 1730 AD. Suraj Mal was so impressed by the Mughal architectural style that his fascination towards the same can easily be seen in the fortification of Deeg Palace. There is a garden in the fort yard of the palace which resembles to that of the Charbagh, the Mughal Garden.

Built in the square shape the Deeg Palace is adorned with the nine hundred fountains. You are suggested to visit Deeg Palace during the monsoon season to view fountain running, during monsoon season on Saturdays the fountains runs. Gopal Sagar and the Rup Sagar is the two huge water tanks present in the fort. On the next to Rup Sagar tank stands the Keshav Bhavan which is comprises with five arches. This is the place where king used to spend his leisure time in monsoon season. With that he also conduct meeting with his officials here in Keshav Bhavan.

Gopal Bhavan in the fort is the place where king used to reside. From Gopal Bhavan you can get a spectacular of the gardens. Nandi Bhavan in the palace was a place of wrestling matches. There are two boat shaped edifice in Nandi Bhavan namely Sawan and Bhado. Watching all these things at ones will be a pleasing experience for your Rajasthan tourism.
