The spiritual City of Merta makes for a great one-day-trip from Ajmer. Once an important kingdom under the reign of Mertia Rathore Rajputs, the city is noted for being the birthplace of Meera Bai, the poetess and devotee of Lord Krishna. Visit the ruins of the 500-year-old birthplace of Meera Bai that echo with the tales of the devotional queen. Tourists can also visit the city centre and see the Meera Bai Temple, also known as the Charbhuja Temple. It has impressive interiors and its walls and floors are adorned with thousands of tiles, decorated with mirrors and gems. The elaborate paintings on the walls depict different Hindu deities. Another tourist stopover is the Meera Bai Smarak or Meera Bai Memorial, a large gate built in typical Rajput architecture using red sandstone. There is a tiny museum near the memorial that offers an insight into the life of Meera Bai. The Aurangzeb Mosque, a fine specimen of Mughal architecture, is another must-visit spot in the city. Merta is a popular excursion while visiting Pushkar, which lies at a distance of 61 km.
