Achalgarh Fort Mount Abu


Achalgarh fort situated about 11 kilometers north of Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan. The fort was originally built by the Paramara dynasty rulers and rebuilt, modernized and named as Achalgarh by Maharana Kumbha in 1452 one of the several forts built during his period in the rule. Achalgarh fort area is entirely surrounded by Mount Abu which is one of the most popular hill stations of North India. It is situated in the mostly desert state of Rajasthan and is often denoted by as an Oasis in the Desert.


History of Achalgarh Fort

According to legend, Hindus respect this place because once Nandini, the cow of the sage Vashisht was caught in a deep gorge and could not free itself. The sage called for Lord Shiva's assistance. Shiva sent Saraswati, the divine stream, to help flood the gorge so that the cow could float up. Sage Vashisht then assured that such mishaps would not occur in future and asked the youngest son of Himalaya to fill the gorge eternally. With the help of the snake, Arbud he successfully completed the task. He took the help of the snake, Arbud. To honor the help, Achalgarh Shiva Temple in Mount Abu is considered to be a revered place amongst all tourists and Hindu pilgrims. This temple dates back to earliest century.


How to Reach Mount Abu

By Air: Udaipur houses the nearest airport, the Maharana Pratap Airport, situated at a distance of 185 km from Mount Abu. The airport has direct flights from some of the major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jaipur.
By Train: Abu Road is the nearest railway station from the hill station, at around 28 km from the city. It is connected by direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Jodhpur.
By Road: Mount Abu is reachable from some of the country's major cities via road, like Delhi, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jaipur and Bundi. Regular buses ply on these routes, which are run by the government and other private operators as well.


Best Time to Visit Mount Abu

Winter season is the best time to visit Mount Abu. Although, due to its height the weather is not extremely hot during summers as well. September to March are ideal months to visit this hill station.
